The Great Barrier Reef from Airlie Beach by Campervan

Quick summary: For campervan travellers, Airlie Beach is one of the best places on the coast to reach the Great Barrier Reef. The outer reef lies around 70 km offshore, beyond the islands, and day trips take you there by large, stable catamaran to pontoons where you can snorkel, dive or view the coral from a semi-submersible. Leave the campervan or motorhome at your holiday park, and plan a full day on the water.

What is the difference between the outer reef and fringing reefs?

ReefWhat it’s like
Outer reefThe open-water reef far offshore, with clearer water, big coral walls and large fish
Fringing reefsCoral close to the islands, calmer and easier for beginners

Outer reef trips are a full day with a longer crossing; fringing reef snorkelling is often combined with Whitehaven Beach or a sailing trip. See snorkelling the Whitsundays.

What happens on an outer reef day trip?

You’ll board a large catamaran at Port of Airlie in the morning, often with a stop at one of the islands on the way. At the reef, a pontoon becomes your base for the day, with snorkelling areas, dive options, underwater viewing and a buffet lunch. Some trips add a helicopter flight over Heart Reef. You’ll be back in Airlie Beach in the late afternoon.

Can non-swimmers enjoy the reef?

Yes. Semi-submersibles and glass-bottom boats show the coral without getting wet, and many pontoons have an underwater viewing area. Snorkelling with a flotation vest and guided snorkel tours suit nervous swimmers.

Is a reef day too long after a drive in an RV?

It can be, so don’t combine them. Arrive in Airlie Beach the day before, sleep at a holiday park, and walk or take a pickup to the boat. Keep the following morning free, too. See parking on tour days.

How can you help protect the reef?

Use reef-safe sunscreen, don’t touch or stand on coral, and follow your guide’s instructions. Many tour operators also take part in reef monitoring, and guides explain how the reef is changing.

Where else can you see the reef on a campervan trip?

From Cairns, at the northern end of a coast trip, reef trips cross to the outer reef from the city. See Airlie Beach to Cairns and browse Great Barrier Reef tours.
