The Swirling Sands

Hill Inlet is a tidal inlet at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach where the incoming and outgoing tides create shifting patterns of white sand and turquoise water — the sand and the sea swirl together in a constantly changing abstract pattern that is one of the most photographed natural scenes in Australia. The inlet is best viewed from the Hill Inlet Lookout, a viewpoint on the headland above the inlet reached by a short bush walk (approximately 10–15 minutes from the northern beach landing point).

The patterns change with every tide — the combination of the sand’s whiteness, the water’s colour range (from pale aqua in the shallows to deep blue in the channels), and the tidal movement creates a natural artwork that is never exactly the same twice. The viewpoint photographs — looking down onto the swirling sand patterns — are the defining image of the Whitsundays.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to see Hill Inlet?

Mid-tide (either incoming or outgoing) produces the most dramatic swirling patterns. High tide covers the sand; low tide exposes it. The guides time the visit for the optimal tidal conditions.

Is Hill Inlet the same as Whitehaven Beach?

Hill Inlet is at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach — the same island (Whitsunday Island), connected by the beach. Most tours visit both: the lookout for the panoramic view, then the beach for the swimming and relaxation.
