The Whitsundays From Above
Scenic flights over the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef provide the aerial perspective that the boat tours cannot — the full extent of Whitehaven Beach (the 7 km sweep of white sand is best appreciated from above), the Heart Reef (a naturally heart-shaped coral formation on the outer reef, visible only from the air), and the reef structure itself (the patterns of coral, sand, and deep blue water extending to the horizon).
Helicopter tours depart from Airlie Beach or Hamilton Island and fly over Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, Heart Reef, and the outer reef. Some tours land on the beach or on a pontoon for a swim and snorkel before the return flight.
Seaplane tours combine the aerial views with water landings — flying over the reef, landing on the water near Whitehaven Beach, and transferring to the beach for swimming and relaxation before the return flight.
Fixed-wing scenic flights provide longer flight times at lower cost than helicopters — covering more reef territory.
